Overview All active VTS members are required to take action to maintain board certification every five (5) years from the year of their initial certification until retirement. Application materials are due June 30 11:59:59 CST of the renewal year. Renewal letters are distributed when membership dues reminders are sent. Members are required to notify the Recertification Chair of renewal pathway by February 1 of the to renewal year. In the event a member wishes to change their renewal pathway, final notification of intent is required no less than sixty (60) days prior to material submission deadline.
An active VTS may apply to maintain specialty certification via one of the following two methods:
A VTS seeking recertification via recertification credits is required to submit recertification materials every five (5) years after initial specialty certification or last recertification by June 30, 11:59:59 CST the year renewal is due. VTS’s may maintain certification by accumulating 500 credits over a period of five (5) years. VTS activity in multiple categories is encouraged and no more than 400 credits in any one activity category will be allowed.
A VTS seeking recertification via examination is required to submit a written notification, for examination at every five (5) years after initial specialty certification or last recertification, thus enabling them to take the examination at years 5, 10 or 15, respectively. Examination must occur in the year of renewal and written notification shall be received by the year preceding renewal (e.g. renewal year is 2023, notification deadline is December 11:59:59 CST 2022).
Requests for Extension of Recertification The 5-year time frame allowed for application for recertification is intended to give VTS’s adequate time to complete the recertification process. Therefore, requests for deadline extensions are not accepted however a VTS that requests an extension of the recertification deadline may only do so with a qualifying event and by submitting a written request to the Academy Secretary by April 1, 11:59:59 CST in the year of renewal expiration.
Submission of Recertification Materials The recertification pathway decision form is currently available through the Academy Google Classroom. Members will receive an invitation to the classroom a minimum of one (1) year prior to recertification and reminders will periodically be given before recertification is required. Proof of attendance for activities is required in the renewal packet for many renewal categories and VTS’s are expected to maintain up to date records of activity. Materials are only accepted in the immediate five (5) years prior to renewal.
